PREGNANCY

For an HIV-positive woman who desires a child or has already fallen pregnant, it is important to use all the known methods to prevent the infection being passed from mother to child.

These include taking medication towards the end of the pregnancy, ceasarian section, foregoing breast feeding (mothers milk has a very high virus count) and a therapy for two to four weeks after the birth of the child. By using these protective measures it is possible to reduce the infection rate from 20 percent to less than two percent.

IMPORTANT:

An HIV-positive woman who desires children or is pregnant should definitely seek advice from a doctor who specializes in HIV.
